WETLANDS CAMPAIGN

shore pools at the head of Gulf of Kalloni - photo by John Bowers
One of the most important ecological features of Lesbos is its extensive and diverse wetlands. Those of the beautiful Gulf of Kalloni are of international importance for migratory birds and in sustaining its rich fisheries. But Lesbos is unique among Aegean islands in having many other wetlands. The sides of the Gulf of Kalloni contain a number of small wetlands that complement those around Kalloni at the head of the Gulf. There are also wetlands on the Gulf of Gera and elsewhere. Some, such as those of the Tschliondas, are of substantial size. Others, such as the marsh at the famous bird watching area of Faneromeni are small.

Wetlands are extremely fragile habitats that need careful and sensitive conservation. The last 15 years has seen a slow process of destruction of Lesbos wetlands and that process appears to be accelerating.

Threats
The wetlands of Lesbos are in danger from two sources:

bulletagricultural development
bulletdumping of building rubble
