Attempt to Drain Xaramida Marsh
[news item September 2009]
A channel has been dug from Xaramida Marsh to the sea with the
intention of draining the marsh to provide an open place for horse riding.
Additionally part of the marsh has been infilled to create a road to a stable
that has been built without the requisite building permits.
The problem was first discovered by WWF Hellas who complained
to the Normarch. There appear to be two individuals involved in the damage.
KEPPE has prepared a report prior to issuing fines. Additionally and
simultaneously the Mayoral office in Mytilini and the police in Periferia
have been asked to initiate processes leading to the demolition of the
building(s).
Xaramida marsh was a lake that was partially drained in the
1950s. It is an excellent wetland and part of the Gulf of Geras Natura 2000
site. It is an important site for dragonflies, diptera and wetland birds.
Friends of Green Lesbos fully supports WWF and stands ready to
add its voice if and when the need arises.
