Cafe opened on the Kalloni Salt-pans
[news item September 2009]
A cafe in a wooden shack has been opened on the beach at the
back of the Kalloni saltpans on one of the best and least disturbed parts of the
wetland. To add to the damage to the habitat from the construction and
development of the access road and parking and the inevitable pollution that
will follow from its operation, palms and other aliens have been planted. The
Mayor of Aghia Paraskevi reportedly said the he gave the proprietor permission
for the cafe "because he was a poor man". The Mayor doesn't have the
power to give permission. This is Natura 2000 land
and well inside the so-called Red Zone that is designed to protect the Natura
wetlands. We have complained to the Nomarchia, seeking the fining of both
parties. Meanwhile we ask the numerous parties of bird-watchers who visit
the salt-pans not to use the cafe.
