More on the disappearing waterfall
[news item September 2009]
We received a report from the Department of Water (PBA)
in March stating that there had been water flowing at Pyges Pesas in
February and expressing the view that the lack of water
previously had been due to the time needed to
recharge the aquifer following the previous years of drought. However
despite the heavy rains in February and March, following the heavy rains
of December and January, and the further rains in early April, there was
absolutely no water going over the Falls in mid April. Accordingly we
wrote again to the PBA expressing our view that someone was either
impounding the water or abstracting it with pipes somewhere between the
spring source (near Mikri Limni) and the waterfalls. We subsequently
learnt from the boy scouts of Molyvos that they had found a dam. We are
asking the PBA to take steps to free the water and to prosecute the
offender for illegal impoundment. This anti-social act has spoilt the
holidays of many tourists as well as a lot of Islanders who visit the
beauty spot.
