WWF wetland monitoring scheme

[news item March 2008]

Following documentation of island wetlands in 2007, WWF-Greece has launched a pilot scheme for monitoring them. Lesbos is one of the five islands in the pilot. The initial survey identified 65 wetland sites on Lesbos. More have now been added. The intention is that each site is inspected every year and changes are documented. Friends of Green Lesbos have provided two of the monitors in the persons of our Vice President, Carol Christ and Terry Robinson. Both are already at work monitoring the Gulf of Kalloni. It appears that almost every site is deteriorating in some way. The outcomes of this exercise feed into our complaints to the authorities.
