Location of the New Electricity Station
[news item September 2005]
A substantial
number of possible sites, scattered across the Island have been considered
but despite offered financial incentives, reportedly free electricity, all
the municipalities concerned have opposed having it in their area. The
latest proposal is Magira, on the wild and beautiful coast east of Plomari. The Authorities are to be
congratulated on finding a site even less accessible and suitable for the
purpose than Plakes. The vision of construction traffic passing through
Plomari and negotiating the narrow and precipitous dirt roads to Magira
does not bear thinking of. This is madness! The new plant shou8ld be built
on the site of the existing one. A new well-designed modern plant would be
far less polluting than the present one and not an eyesore. This would be
an environmental improvement. There would be no need for additional
transmission lines. Mytilini would have cleaner air, and be rid of an
eyesore, and the beauty and tranquillity of places like Plakes and Magira
would not be damaged. In 2004 we presented our
position statement on the issue to the Nomarch.
