New Chair and Direction for LEPET
[news item September 2005]
Congratulations to
one of our most enthusiastic and active members, Dimitra Balkizas,
proprietor of the Madonna Studios in Vatera and sponsor of a number of
green tours (www.greekisland-tours.com)
on her unanimous election as the new chair of LEPET. Under Dimitra’s
guidance LEPET, which was set up to further the interests of green tourism
in Lesbos, will take a more active stance on environmental protection and
will co-operate with us in doing so. We hope to sign a Memorandum of
co-operation in the autumn. Among other actions we hope to talk to the
Regional Governor as well as the Nomarch about advancing environmental
protection in the Island. A possible agenda for these meetings will
include the Plan for the Wetlands, restoring the wetlands and our
survey of immediate action
including Environmentally Friendly Farming schemes Unlike Friends of Green Lesbos LEPET has some
finance of its own and would be an acceptable body to receive
international money for buying land for nature reserves. It has already
received a small sum from HoneyGuide Wildlife Holidays (www.honeyguide.co.uk)
for this purpose. We are talking with LEPET about possible sites. Friends
of Green Lesbos would act as advisor on their management.
